How we worked it out

  1. Priced for ordinary contents in a plain box. Tubes, rolls, cans, large amounts of liquid, live animals and hazardous items cost more.
  2. eBay takes 13.6% of your $4.99 shipping charge: $0.68. That leaves $4.31 for the label.
  3. Ground Advantage, under 1 lb, zone 8: $8.95 (USPS Notice 123)
  4. $8.95 label − $4.31 left: you lose $4.64 on each far-away order.
  5. Your $4.99 covers no parcel in any zone.
  6. Charge at least $10.36: $10.36 − $1.41 eBay fee = $8.95, the zone 8 label.
  7. Weigh and measure it packed. If USPS finds more, eBay charges you the difference later.

Under $8.48, a Ground Advantage charge covers no rural buyer

The cheapest Ground Advantage label to a rural ZIP code is $7.33, for a parcel under 1 lb to a nearby buyer. After eBay's fee on the charge, 13.6% in most categories, it takes $8.48 to cover it. Farther buyers' labels cost more.

Free shipping comes out of your price

With free shipping you pay the label, so the item price has to carry it. A 2 lb parcel to a far-away rural buyer costs $13.42. Raise the item's price by $15.53 to cover it and eBay's $2.11 fee on the raise.

eBay's rules don't allow a handling or packaging fee on free shipping, so the cost goes into the price.

One policy edit updates its listings

If you edit an eBay shipping policy, eBay updates the listings that use it. A listing with a pending sale or offer, or ending within 12 hours, may keep the old policy.

A listing with its own shipping cost may not follow the policy: check that listing too.

After an edit, check the activity log on Manage business policies for listings that didn't update.

Each calculator applies the platform's published fees to the whole amount the platform charges them on, works in whole cents or pence and rounds each fee to the nearest one. Every step is shown, and every fee links to the platform's own page with the date we checked it. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we will fix it and note the change.
